VISIT TO ST. PAISIUS ORTHODOX MONASTERY http://www.stpaisiusmonastery.org By Sr. Molly Hargadine In October, I paid a visit to St. Paisius Orthodox Monastery, the first Orthodox religious community I have visited.  I am taking time and space on our Flag page because I know that most of our readers are from Western Denominations and have had little or no contact with Orthodox religious life.  This series will require several editions, as there are so many photos.  This third series is of scenic views around the living and farming areas.

COURTYARD

Behind the main residence, is a courtyard surrounded by an adobe wall.  Within the yard are varieties of nut trees, decorative gardens and a work area on and around the porch.  Walking through the courtyard, one finds a gate leading to the guest quarters and agricultural work areas.

AGRICULTURAL AREA

As in many Western communities, farming is a major work.  A variety of fruit, nuts and vegetables are grown.  Chicken are raised for the eggs that are occasionally eaten, but are not slaughtered for food, as the sisters do not eat meat.  Goats are also raised for the milk.

Sometimes the vespers bell rings before everything is stowed away.  Wheelbarrows and buckets wait until after Hours for rescue.

Pomegranites, lovely when ripe on the trees, also provide for the community/'s famous pomegranite jelly.

The last series will come next month, showing some of the scenic wildlife on the monastery grounds.
